Cataracts: Here is everything you need know

What are cataracts, the symptoms and what is the treatment?...

Cataracts are the most common cause of treatable vision loss in the UK and are quite common to develop as we get older.

Here is everything you need to know about cataracts and how we can help to identify and treat this…

What are cataracts?

Cataracts are the clouding of the lens in your eye.

Most people will begin to develop cataracts after the age of 65, however they can also be developed in our younger years.

Contrary to popular belief cataracts form inside your eye and not created through skin growing over the eye.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

Cataracts cause changes to occur in the lens of your eye which in turn makes your vision cloudy and ‘misty’.

Other symptoms include:
-       Dazzled by lights such as car headlamps or sunlight, due to increased sensitivity.
-       Colour vision becoming faded or appearing ‘washed out’.
-       Difficulty seeing in dim light conditions.

How can cataracts be treated?

Cataracts can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases with a simple and relatively quick operation.

The surgery procedure involves removing your cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial one, usually made from plastic or silicone.

This is the only way of treating cataracts, as there is no medicine or eye drops to alleviate the symptoms.

How can cataracts be identified?

If you have any concerns about your vision or if a loved one has complaints regarding their vision you should arrange to see a local optician.

They will be able to test your sight and assess your eye health, which allows them to identify any eye conditions.

Visioncall’s optometrists are all trained in identifying cataracts and to conduct a test using the most advanced equipment.
